Ranking context
Why it ranks #16
Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version rank #16 in our Best Game Boy Advance Games list as one paired entry. Kanto's clear progression makes either version the easiest classic Pokémon starting point. Version exclusives, older training systems and less post-game depth than Emerald limit the position.
Kanto gives the player clear goals while leaving meaningful freedom between several gyms. The remakes add abilities, held items, improved menus and the Sevii Islands without turning the campaign into a different style of Pokémon game. The 2026 Switch download releases also give the pair a current official route.

Best for
you want Kanto with GBA-era mechanics or a clean first step into classic Pokémon.
Skip if
completing a collection without another version matters, or if repeated training and random encounters feel too slow.
Modern playability
How it holds up today
Readable pixel art and straightforward progression remain accessible. Lack of whole-party experience sharing and version-based collection requirements create more friction than recent games. The Switch editions improve legal access, but current trading, local play and future Pokémon HOME support must be described from official documentation at publication time.
The difference
What makes it different
FireRed and LeafGreen are the focused Kanto choice; Emerald has the more elaborate battle endgame. Either way, the party is something you collect and rebuild rather than a fixed cast handed to you by the story.
