Ranking context
Why it ranks #17
Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising ranks #17 in our Best Game Boy Advance Games list. It is larger and more varied than the first game, but its longer maps and steeper campaign make it a less universal entry point. That tradeoff puts it below the original while preserving a strong place in the Top 25.
The sequel adds new units, commander powers and nation-based campaign paths without burying the readable tactical foundation. Many maps ask the player to solve a specific positional problem rather than simply destroy every enemy, which gives the campaign a stronger sense of escalation.

Best for
Play it for long tactical problems, commander variety and optional challenge maps.
Skip if
you want the gentlest introduction or frequently need to stop in the middle of a tactical sequence.
Modern playability
How it holds up today
Its crisp rules and information-rich maps remain easy to read. The largest modern drawback is access: the original GBA edition is not currently offered through the US Nintendo Classics library. Re-Boot Camp provides a legal modern remake, but it should not be treated as the same version.
The difference
What makes it different
This is the bigger, harder Advance Wars, but not the better starting point. Every map begins with a fresh army and an economic problem, so the attachment comes from solving the battlefield rather than protecting named characters as in Fire Emblem.
